Philippians 1:21
For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

This shows that Paul is sold out totally to Christ, and he has no fear of death because he knows that if he dies he will be with Christ, which he expresses as gain. Yet in the following verses he indicates that he will likely be able to continue preaching the gospel and teaching the believers even more, so that they will grow in their knowledge and actions for Christ. Paul was (is) such a great example to the church today, to be totally committed to Christ. Lord, help Your church today to be as committed as Paul was, in furthering the body of Christ. Amen

These are challenging words for a Christian who abides in Christ, a present challenge to me(us) all who are still living as we face reality that is also appointed for us to die. Hebrews 9:27 Just as people are destined to die once, and after that face judgment. " to live is Christ (but) to die is gain (Eternal Life)

Well expressed Peter, and again we chose the same verse, with similar thoughts regarding it. Enjoy your weekend with the knowledge and contentment of His love. Calling for high winds and high of 37 again tomorrow, and 48 on Sunday. :-)

This means that if I truly have a relationship with Jesus Christ, I am bullet proof! Nothing can hurt me because if I live, Christ lives through me to others. If I die, I go to be with Jesus. Either way, I am with Jesus Christ which is truly the place of compete joy! Praise Jesus!

This verse is very powerful for me in that in any event whether I live or die it will be beneficial. If I live I will continue to like my life be an example for othere in what I say and do. If I die I will go to be with my Creator and others will reflect on the kind of individual I was and how I try to win souls for the Kingdom. Lord continue to let my life be a LIGHT to help others find their way to you.

This verse summarizes and defines Paul's life. I can imagine that being written on his grave stone if that was done back then. Thank you Paul for the life you lived in Christ and the example you are to all believers.

Hi. Allan. I don't know how many times the JW's come knocking your door, but one day when they came to mine the subject of "soul sleep" was brought up (they dont' believe in going to heaven, but you simply "don't exist" until you are raised up on the last day). So I showed them this verse here and asked them this question: Why would Paul say "to die is gain" if we go into "soul sleep". If we are sleeping what are we gaining? Regardless of what they answer the next question is a few verses down at Phil 1:23: "I desire to depart and BE WITH Christ". Ask "if we go into soul sleep at death, why does Paul say I desire to depart (die) and BE with Christ rather than depart and go into soul sleep"? Again, it doesn't matter how they try to justify it, what matters is you are planting seeds of truth.. it will get them thinking as well as all people that don't believe that our spirit goes to be with Jesus when we die.
