Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me.

This is hopefully what happens when people grow in the Lord. I can think of more than one individual who's lives have been totally transformed by the gospel. It thrills my heart to see it happen. God bless all my brothers and sisters here.

When God transforms someone it does not matter what your past looks like you become a useful vessel to the Kingdom of God and humankind. Thank God for transformation.

This verse shows the Power of God in Christ to change lives: "Formally he was useless to you," Onesimus was Philemon's slave and most likely hid and avoided his chores or duties. And if he did them, he probably did a half-fast job. Then to make matters worse, I think he ran away from him. Now however, Onesimus is a new man in Christ; no longer avoiding his responsibilities but whole-heartedly desiring to help where ever he can. "The New Adam." Praise God!
