Esther 1:19
"Therefore, if it pleases the king, let him issue a royal decree and let it be written in the laws of Persia and Media, which cannot be repealed, that Vashti is never again to enter the presence of King Xerxes. Also let the king give her royal position to someone else who is better than she.

It appears that King Xerxes in his intoxicated state, revealed a lot of pride and self deemed importance. He obviously did not even consult his wife Vashti regarding her decision, which most likely was that she did not wish to be paraded as a symbol of Xerxes pride. This shows how intoxication reveals arrogance and lack of consideration for ones mate.

Good insight to this verse Lloyd, it was obvious the king was intoxicated and his pride took over. As we see pride taken over by many kings in the Old and New Testament, and it always leads to the plans of God. Have a Joyful and Blessed Lords Day Lloyd:)

This is an interesting chapter and verse in Esther. God allows the king to divorces his queen because she would not come to him when he sent for her. This again shows how God serves His own purpose, even by the sins and follies of men (we saw this happen with the kings of Israel), and we know the good thing that will come out of this. Key words : Also let the king give her royal position to someone else who is better then she. Leading up to the reign of Esther. Amazing how God's plan come together.

So true Peter. We chose the same verse but looked at it from different perspectives in our comments, but you are so right in God bringing His plan together by causing King Xerxes' wife to decline the command and her being replaced with one more suited to God's purpose. Have a relaxed and blessed weekend brother Peter. :-)

Can you imagine this situation today. Submission of a wife to a husband must be earned. There is no true respect that can be forced only earned by living a Godly life and setting an example worthy of respect. Demanding that his wife do something that was for show and would humiliate her was certainly not the way to gain her respect. She rightly refused. If it goes against God and your own moral compass then it doesn't matter who demands it.

This judgment sounds a lot like the Islamic ideology today, where the women have no rights or say in what they can do and are severely punished for disobedience to their men. This is not what God gave women to men for. It is also stated that Xerxes was under the influence of alcohol, which Your word tells us is not right. Lord, I ask that You would awaken men who treat their wives as king Xerxes did, that You did not give women to men, to be slaves to their every command as was done by Xerxes. Amen
