When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.

Knowing that the star meant the arrival of the Messiah the "Magi" wise men were overjoyed - I guess this is because they saw the prophecies coming true. What it meant to them can only be compared to our waiting for the rapture our waiting to see Jesus in his Kingdom - what a joyful occasion.

Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

While Joseph was faithful to the law of the time, which would have required him to expose Mary to the public where she would have been disgraced, he was not of the mind to do so. He decided to divorce her quietly there by saving her the public shame, this to me shows in his heart Joseph's love for Mary was greater than his faith in the law of the time. This sets the stage for his willingness to accept the angles direction - thankfully.
