Matthew 1:19
Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
Nancy M. from Runnemede, NJ said:
Matthew 1:19 – When you really love someone, you want to protect his or her honor. When you know they did something wrong you want to hide their shame for them. Too many people are always complaining about their spouses. They do not realize when they talk bad about their spouse they are speaking ill of themselves. It is rare for people to talk bad about their children but for some reason people love to get you to think they are the better of the two in the marriage. Joseph was a very special person. Although Mary broke his heart, he still did not want to bring her any harm. Father in Heaven, I pray that I would always protect someone honor even if they have wronged me. Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. (1 Corinthians 13:7)

What first appears as a negative event in our lives often portends a blessing from God if we pause and feflect on the situation. Joseph denied himself the initial reaction to denounce Mary he enabled God to reveal himself to him through an angel and was blessed with the knowledge that he would raise Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior

Not only was Joseph a faithful man but kind. He could have raved & ranted adout Mary's condition., but he said he would divorce her quietly. It would have given family time to decide what to do, but as we know what happened, Joseph showed himself to be a man of honor.

Though his faith was in the law he was a man of compassion and did not want to disgrace Mary and signifies a struggle between his love for her and faith toward the law. Perhaps to take time to consult with the Lord first if so he later got his answer.

This touches me because of Joseph's love. His love for his faith that he would keep it's law that he was to marry Mary and to Mary (despite the hurt he must have felt) because he did not want to publicly disgrace her. I never seem to hear too much about Joseph and his role once Jesus was born.

Matthew 1:19
Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
Linda C. from Somewhere said:
My study bible says that Joseph was faced with a difficult choice. He then obeyed the angels command to marry Mary. His actions revealed four admirable qualities: (1) righteousness ( 1:19 ) (2) discretion and sensitivity ( 1:19) (3) responsivness to God (1:24) and self-disipline (1:25)
God show us that there are more options than we think when it comes to circumstances. When our decisions affect the lives of others, we must seek Gods wisdom and not rely on our wisdom. For me this is so true. I need to think long and hard. I used to tell my children to ask and then wait for an answer. If they want an answer now it may not be the answer they want or need.

I appreciate how Joseph, even though at the time he didn't know what was going on with Mary he chose not to make her a public disgrace. That takes alot of class. Of course the angel reveals what is really happening with Mary. He still cared about her before he knew and didn't want to shame her. Great character in my book.
