He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.

Why he give the evils permission? there maybe 2 reasons. 1 Jesus have mercy even on evils, they beg him again and again, they afraid him, they fell on his knees when saw him. 2. These evils let the man hurt himself, Jesus love us, although that man do not have faith on him, he still save him first, even permit the evils requirement. God always like that, when we are still sin, Jesus has died for us.

My opinion is that the demons, evil spirits, did not die. They just went into waiting until they could inhabit someone else. I believe that demons are the original fallen angels as well as the spirits of un-Godly people. My understanding is that they won't die until God throws them into the lake of fire as described in Revelation 20:14 and 21:8.
