Mark 1:17
"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will send you out to fish for people."
Peter B.
Peter B. from Buchanan, MI said:
As Jesus called His disciples to follow Him, Jesus is calling us today to follow Him, to walk with Him daily on the path of life that He has chosen for us. Jesus was the guide for the disciples, as they walked with Him. And Jesus is still the guide for us, but through the person of The Holy Spirit. "Come Follow Me" Follow Me into the World to Fish for People, powerful words.

Amen, Peter. And the church needs to heed His call, "Come Follow Me." I am sensing Holy Spirit moving in the church of Christ today, more and more. I know He is stirring our church right now, and I pray yours too. The enemy has had his way for far to long, and it's time the body of Christ knocked him of his pedestal. May the Lord guide and protect you and yours, Peter, as we draw ever closer to Him.

Often times in the Christian life we get our eyes on other believers. We look at their lives and judge their spirituality. When Jesus called His disciples He didn't say, "Follow other believers." He said, "Come, follow Me!" Lord, help me to keep my eyes fixed on You!

"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will send you out to fish for people."

Mark1: 16-20 As He was going along by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon, casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” 18 Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. 19 Going on a little farther, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who were also in the boat mending the nets. 20 Immediately He called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went away to follow Him. George Bernard Shaw said: "I have never had any feeling for the working classes, except a desire to abolish them, and replace them with sensible people." He also said, "I am a Millionaire. That is my religion". But then he said, "The longer I live the more I see that I am never wrong about anything, and that all the pains I have so humbly taken to verify my notions have only wasted my time". Then, he said, "Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance". James said, "a double minded man is instable in all his ways", blown about by every wind of doctrine. Sounds like Mr. Shaw was born with a silver son in his mouth, and as a play write, despised working class people, considered himself an expert and thought very highly of himself, that the knowledge of any one that disagreed with his was false. The above statements all contradict one another and sound pretty double minded to me. Jesus didn't appeal to the rich, he went out with and for the working class and dregs of society. He looked toward the inner person not their outward veneer. When he saw each of His disciples, He said, "follow Me". That's what Christianity is all about: following Jesus, not theological systems, a set of rules, or even helping people . He started His ministry with first these four "Lowly working class fisherman", then twelve, then hundreds, then thousands and thousands upon thousands throughout the centuries. Vs 21-27 They went into Capernaum; and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and began to teach. 22 They were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. 23 Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, 24 saying, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” 25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” 26 Throwing him into convulsions, the unclean spirit cried out with a loud voice and came out of him. 27 They were all amazed, so that they debated among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.” The scribes of Jesus' day usually just got up and quoted a bunch of other Rabbis. When Jesus went into the temple, He taught them as one having authority. He taught with authority because He was and is the ultimate authority. He is The Word of God, made flesh, that came to dwell among us full of grace and truth. He certainly didn't need to rely on man's interpretation, of The Word. He didn't just speak with authority, He HAD authority over everything, because He was their creator. When He came in the presence of evil spirits, they immediately knew who He was and said, "I know who You are; the Holy One of God!" Jesus didn't do some sort of ritualistic hocus-pocus ceremony, He simply told the evil spirits to be quiet. rebuked them and cast them out. I hear of these "deliverance ministers" that say they ask the demon his name. Only once did Jesus ask a demon his name. The rest of the time, He told them to be quiet and leave. Why would someone ask a servant of the father of lies who they are? It's best to know what the spiritual roots of their problem is, go after the support system, then then big guys automatically tumble, and do so without a big screeching fanfare. Jesus never failed to cast out a demon, and He never used an elaborate ceremony. He just told them to "Be quiet, and come out!" He had authority over the demon of sickness in Peters mother in law. "He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and immediately the fever left her". Then, when the leper in vs 40 came up to Him, He touched him and made him whole. Jesus never healed anyone the same way twice. I believe He did that because He didn't want us to build a doctrine around a method, but to rely solely on Him for our guidance. I think it was important in this case, for Jesus to touch this leper because they were forbidden to even come near people, and probably hadn't been touched in many years. There's a lot of healing in a touch. Papa God, may I always just follow Jesus and not the doctrines of man.

It's amazing to me that when Jesus calles to these men "Come, follow me," they never questioned him. At least I haven't come across any scripture where they question him as to why they should follow him unless I miss it. Knowing what we know today would we be willing to get up and leave everything and follow someone who says "follow me and I will send you out to fish for people." It is food for thought. Praise God
