The father actively awaits the son to return but he was patient in waiting for his son to come to his senses and return. Our Lord waits for the lost to return to Him voluntarily.

Like this son many of us thing that the grass is greener on the other side, but to our dismay it isn't. That's why we have God to show is the way. He knows what is best for us and we need to listen harder for his voice leading us to the greener pastures.
