2 views: his context is "...so that we can be with him up until his end, and be killed serving him, being loyal.";. Or, his context is "...so when I die I'll be able to be with him, not apart from him."

Thomas is one of my favorite disciples. Here Jesus is about to go back towards Jerusalem where he has said that he would die. Thomas, probably sarcastic, is saying let us go with him so we can suffer the same as He.

I love the fact that even though Thomas was convinced this trip would end in death, he was ready to go with Jesus. The trip did not end in death, but in victory. So the application for us is this: Even though we cannot see the end of a project, even though we don't think we can accomplish a thing, if we go with Jesus we will end in victory. If we obey Him, He will accomplish His will in and through us. We don't have to be able to see the outcome. Like Thomas we need to be willing to follow even if it leads us to death. After death comes the resurrection!

This shows the type of loyalty that the disciples had to the Messiah Jesus. It was "to the death" type of allegiance, They did not agree with the idea of taking the risk to see Lazarus or understand what Messiah Jesus was talking about when HE spoke about raising him from the dead or waking him up. But they had decided that they would follow Messiah Jesus to the death. Lord, may I have such a commitment to you this day. Amen
