And he inserted the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark to carry it.

The ark was designed to be carried by the priests. In 2 Samuel 6, David wanted to move the ark to Jerusalem but he placed it on a new cart pulled by oxen. Because David failed to follow God's instructions the priest Uzzah lost his life. God's commandments are not suggestions for us to follow if we feel like it. We show Jesus that we love Him by obeying Him!

Great point, Terry. Help us, Lord, to be obedient to your commands and principles.

The Ark represented the presence of God in the midst of the Israelites as they journeyed through the wilderness. Everything was made of pure gold or covered with gold, even the seemingly "less important" parts. The poles were essential for carrying the Ark and, even they, were overlaid with gold. In God's service there is no room for pride as to who has the most important work for Him. Every place of service is essential.
