Acts 6:2
So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, "It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables.

So often in the Church, we become distracted by things of lesser importance and struggle with the teaching of the Word and prayer. So often, we focus on the social work - feeding the poor, social justice, caring for the sick, the migrant, etc. - that we forget to bring the Bible into it or become divided over these things as opposed to standing united in the Word. Though these things are good the are not the Gospel and are not the faith. Unfortunately, because of this, there are issues of the faith that are often being judged by standards of what the world thinks we as the Church should be doing while not understanding the true ministry of Jesus Christ and what we were called to be. We do the things to help those in need not for our salvation, but in response to it. The Church is not meant to be a food bank or shelter, but proclaimers of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the Truth of God calling all out of the bondage of sin into the redemption offered through Jesus Christ.

This reinforces that we don't all perform the same roll in the body of Christ. Lord, please reveal to us the roll you would have us fill that we might be useful in expanding Your kingdom and ministering to each other.

Hi Matt. You know, we were going through this verse in bible study and one thing I learned: EVERYONE stacks chairs (i.e. serves tables) before a promotion. Good example is Stephen - on of the greatest Bible heros, full of the Holy Spirit and our first Martyr. Yet, before he became an Apostle, he was "serving tables". I will pray for your role. ( :

Unless we are willing to serve we will never know what it is that God is calling us to do...When we are willing to step out of our comfort zone and surrender our lives for God to use us than we will do things that we never thought we could do by the grace of God to be an encouragement and blessing to others and to expand the kingdom of God for His glory!

I understand that we all must be servants, I just found it interesting that there are people who are called to focus on other things as well (ie:evangelism etc). Thank you for your advice and prayers... I'm not sure exactly what I am being called to do yet, but I do want to be an open and willing vessel for Him.
