The king answered, "I will do whatever seems best to you."

So the king stood beside the gate while all his men marched out in units of hundreds and of thousands.

David listened to his men in this case. I can think of a lot of instances today where it would do our nations well to listen to the people instead of thinking they are God and doing what they want.
