Here we see God's conditional promise to Solomon, if you follow my commands and observe my decrees and laws. Solomon had completed the task at hand by building the Temple. But this verse God is giving Solomon a warning, fore He knew Solomon's heart, He knew that Solomon would fail and would not remain faithful. And God who is all knowing the kings that followed Solomon would be unfaithful. And as we study God's word there are many promises, that each promise carries a responsibility to be faithful and obedient.

It serves as a warning, that we need to stay faithful to God. He will never stop loving us, but will use discipline to bring us back into a place of worship.
