"As for this temple you are building, if you follow my decrees, observe my laws and keep all my commands and obey them, I will fulfill through you the promise I gave to David your father.

I think God wanted to encourage Solomon to keep moving forward but also to remind him he was to follow God's commands and to obey them. God also wanted to keep Solomon from becoming prideful in himself because of the temple he was building. God wants us to do his will but not for ourselves or to bring fame for ourselves but to bring glory to God.

The word the Lord had spoken to king David would be honored, as long as Solomon followed through in keeping the Lord's laws and commands. God never goes back on His word, so long as we follow His commands. Thank You, Lord, for Your steadfastness, and help me/us to always keep Your commandments that honor You. Amen

When I see King Solomon building the temple for the Lord, and the Lord told him if you follow my decrees and observe my laws and keep all my commands and obey them, I will live among the Israelites and not abandon my people, it reminds me of my walk with God and the temple I'm building for Him in me. His promise always stands true. Let's make ourselves temples worthy for the Lord to reside within.

I Kings 6:12 – Here we see the famous “if you” then “I will”. Solomon is building the temple but God is building Solomon. We can be faithful in serving the Lord and faithful in Telling Others Daily About our Savior but the most important thing is allowing God to build us. I know as I serve the Lord and Tell Others about Him I am learning about Christ and growing closer to Him, but serving alone doesn’t cut it. We must be in the Word and in Prayer Daily feeding our Spirit. Jesus has to be our Lord, Savior and Friend.

Since the temple was completed (fulfilling the promise made to David), Solomon must have been pretty faithful to God during these years and obeyed the decrees, laws and commands of God. It was only later in life that he began to stray (I assume).
