Back then and today we think God does not know what we do but he does, he knows everything and one day we will answer for our words and actions.

We can trick everyone in the world but we can never tricked God. He knows everything. So whether we did something selfishly or out of love, God knows it. He knows our and minds and every inclinations of our hearts. If He searches your heart, will He say to you, you are a child after my own heart? Psalm 139:23-24 "23 Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."

Today when we live our lives for God, He will direct our way and show us understanding through the Holy Spirit. This can only be when we spend time each day in the Scripture, pray for God's direction and understanding continually, and be the witness He has command us to be. We see that Ahijah had this kind of relationship with God and we can too!
