What purpose did the old prophet have in deceiving the man go God? He truly was sad for the loss of the mans life, but why? Can someone help me understand this?

Hi Bill, i can only guess, but i think the old prophet wanted to feel and look important. If someone like Pastor Chuck Smith (who went home with the Lord today) was speaking in the city near me (Philly) and had a really busy schedule but took time out to have lunch with me I would be honored and my friends would think I was someone special. If that desire in my heart was stronger than my love for the Lord I would say anything to make it happen. But if Papa Chuck got in trouble for believing my lie and dinning with me I would feel bad.
