"followed the Lord wholeheartedly" not just when they had run out of options, not when they were hoping that God would bail them out of more struggles. So many times, people of the OT fell into a pathetic cycle of misery. They would reach terrible times, call on the Lord, Who was beyond faithful, and then they would forget about how God rescued them, and even turn away from Him to other false gods. Rinse and repeat.
