People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument.

I have never liked "I swear on my mother's grave" or "I swear to God". I think that if we give an oath, then if our word is not good enough because we cannot be trusted, then why putting my hand on a book does that change. I am a trusted person and would never disrespect the Bible but many would not care.
