Exodus 34:20
Redeem the firstborn donkey with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck. Redeem all your firstborn sons.

"No one is to appear before me empty-handed.

The firstborn are dedicated to God. The animals were for sacrifice, but the sons were for living sacrifice to serve God in the temple and what ever capacity they are capable of. A calling to those of us today who are firstborn and otherwise. Are we fullfilling our purpose before God? Light my path and direct my steps so that others may be blessed through me for You, oh Lord, my loving Lord!

The second part of this verse is perhaps one of the mainstays of my worship of God. Do not come to God empty handed. Even when you are seeking Him with a request or petition, do not go empty handed. We are to come into His presence with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. We are to come with praise on our lips and thankgiving in our hearts. We are to come with something to give back to Him, who gave us life and breath and all good things, including eternal life.
