Often in the Books of Exodus and Leviticus you read the phrase, "It is a burnt offering to the Lord, a pleasing aroma presented to the Lord. That doesn't mean that God enjoyed smelling animal flesh burning. The Tabernacle was called "the tent of meeting" for a reason. Sin separates humans from God, so He came up with a system of animal sacrifices to cover people's sin. This temporary covering restored a persons relationship with God. The animal burning on the altar was a pleasing aroma to the Lord because a sinner had been restored to Him. The New Testament says something similar of Jesus, "For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame. (Hebrews 12:2) Jesus joyfully went to the cross because He knew the end result would be our salvation!

I find this fascinating and mysterious that a burnt offering presents a pleasing aroma to God.
Is the aroma symbolic or literal?
