1 Corinthians 14:34
Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the law says.

Times, traditions and customs have changed since Paul's time. Women speak in tongues and prophesy. God gives them messages for others too.

This is a very confusing verse for me, and even the commentaries are not in agreement upon it, but my thought is that Paul was not saying that women should not prophecy or speak out in church but that it should be orderly in nature. If someone has an explanation for verses 34 & 35, don't hesitate to feed me, and anyone else in my lack of clarity. God bles

I would guess that Paul is speaking of the 'law of the land' such as we see in the mid-east even today of women being in subjection to men according to the law of the land. He also said in 1Timothy 2: 12 that he (Paul) would not let a woman teach, nor to usurp authority over a man. Because of such scriptures, I believe it is important for us to reckognize our place in the body of Christ and to trust God to guide and direct us through our leaders. Emphasis on trust in God, not in the mere humans who are over us in Christ. I also believe that the men in the body of Christ should take time to listen to the women in their life, if she believes God is calling her into a ministry where she would be speaking etc. Galatians 3: :28 tells us there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, their is neither MALE NOR FEMALE: for we are all ONE in Christ Jesus. Such ones as Joyce Meyer makes it clear that God does call and bless such ministries that are of Him. It is obvious that He definitely called her and He certainly has blessed the multitudes through her.

Thanks Vivian, and your comment regarding Joyce Meyer shows there is something unclear in this passage, as Joyce is a powerfully anointed woman of God. Even the commentaries do not clearify what the intent is here. God bless you, sister.

So it is written, but even in the highest of Christian churches, women are now speaking. If it is OK to modify this because the times have changed, why then are we not to modify other rules?

Katherine H. I might be wrong, but it might be due to the law of the land in biblical times, especially in the mid-east that women were to keep silent in church.

This is a challenging chapter. I know the Bible speaks to the people of all times but I find it difficult when there are many anointed women of God who not only speak to but preach to the church. One that stands out prominently is Joyce Meyer. I can understand that if a person speaks to the body in a tongue there must be an interpreter because they are speaking to the church and it would mean nothing without an interpreter.

I love Joyce Meyer. God has blessed me and millions of others through her ministry. One thing God made clear to me is the fact that He spoke through a dumb jackass and He can raise up the stones from the earth to praise His Holy Name, certainly He can speak through a woman, even through me. That was the end of the argument when I tried telling Him I was supposed to keep silent at a time when He was clearly telling me He wanted me to speak. :) He overcame every objection I had, praise Jesus. The blessings were unending. God's best to you and yours always

This verse confuses me. In many places, Paul commends women for the fine job they worked in his ministry and in furthering the gospel of the Lord. Why then does he say women should be silent while in church? I have heard many women speak a good sermon or sing great praises. Perhaps the answer is in the fact that he says women SHOULD be silent rather than MUST be silent. Anyone can be in submission to the Lord whether they speak or not.

I find this a challenging chapter too, Henry. Some makes sense but other statements don't. I have checked commentaries but get no concise answer. I can understand that if a person is speaking to a congregation in a tongue, then the must be an interpreter but I find other parts of this chapter confusing. I think of a very prominent preacher like Joyce Meyer and am sure thankful for her ministry.

I once read that it only meant women should not disrupt the service by asking questions etc., but should wait until they were home. Also have to consider it was the law of the land at the time, and still is I'm sure in some mid-east countries.
