1 Chronicles 25:1
David, together with the commanders of the army, set apart some of the sons of Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun for the ministry of prophesying, accompanied by harps, lyres and cymbals. Here is the list of the men who performed this service:

David never failed to have the Lord's ministry active for his people. And he obviously always provided worship music as well. Worship music is so necessary to welcome the Lord, both them and now. Psa 147:1 Praise ye the LORD: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely.

Apparently, these were to "speak or sing by inspiration of God in prediction or simple discourse" according to Strongs concordance ref # H5012. This is true prophetic worship. I belive God still wants to speak to His people in this manner and some room is being made for it in certain circles but it must be judged properly by the Word.

1 Chronicles 25:1 – David and the commanders of the army were in charge of the musicians. i like this because back then and still today, the nation’s security is directly related to and depended upon their worship of God. The musician’s ministry was two-fold. They prophesied to the people through music, which is a great way to memorize scripture and they led them in praise and thanksgiving to the Lord. Beautiful Savior, I thank you for the gift of hearing, so that i can worship you in song anywhere, anytime because the words, mostly your Words are easily brought to my memory through songs that i have heard even as a child. Jesus loves me this i know, for the bible tells me so. And yes, i love Jesus because He first loved me.

This is a bit puzzling to me, as I always thought prophets were chosen and gifted by God, rather than just chosen by man, unless David had some insight into whom God had gifted.

David and the commanders of the army must have recognized that Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun as having a gift for prophesying and gifted with music with the instruments that are listed here. I remember that in some of the psalms were written by Asaph. I also find it interesting that in verse 3 it says that Jeduthn prophesied, using a harp. My thought is that prophecy is telling what is going to happen. And I wonder how you do that using the harp?

Good question, Sue, for which I don't have an answer, unless it was that he just played the harp while prophesying. Sure is not very clear to me either. God bless.

They way i understand it, it was the words of the song that were prophetic and the harp was used as the tune in order to sing it and memorize it.
