Now go, lead the people to the place I spoke of, and my angel will go before you. However, when the time comes for me to punish, I will punish them for their sin."

God was angry at the people for making a false idol instead of waiting for the Lord.

Thank God for Jesus Christ who died on the cross for our sins! Here, I witness the grace of God and that God keeps His promises. Also, I see the holiness of God that dealt with His children because of their sin.

Obedience, obedience, obedience; IT IS A REQUIREMENT, a must. God had already told the Israelites that thou shalt not have any other gods before me. And the first thing they do is build an idol and sacrifice and worship it? So punishment was expected. But what I really like here is the mercy God showed. Notice how the word 'destroy' changed to 'punish' after Moses interceded for the Israelites? I am a firm believer of intercessory prayer!

This is a very difficult passage to understand; there is so much going on! What impresses me the most is that we get a glimpse into the character of god. He sees the israelites for what they truly are, 'a stiff-necked people', He sees their sin, idolatry, and STILL is willing to cover them with his protection and guidance. Twice in the chapter God says to Moses "Now go...", again showing a glimpse of His character; He does not act on His anger, He does not quickly fly into a rage and wipe them out. He explains what He will do, 'destroy them', yet hears Moses' plea for the people, then provides an opportunity for redemption and forgiveness. He doesn't just blot everyone out, only those who sinned against Him will be punished. the character of God as I see it in this chapter, loving, patient, merciful, and just.
