“We All Need a Savior”
1 Corinthians 1:4
I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus.
Thoughts for Today:
Oftentimes when I read Paul's writings, I am amazed at the tact and diplomacy of his words. Today is one example. Paul couldn't say, "I thank my God for your faithfulness," because the Corinthians weren't faithful. He couldn't say, "I thank my God for your righteousness," because they were far from righteous. However, he could say, with absolute sincerity, "I thank my God for His grace given to you." Why? Because they really needed it!
This is a great verse for me personally as well. I imagine Paul sitting at his desk, with a great big smile on his face, and writing this letter to me, "Mike, when I think about you and all of your faults, I thank God for His grace." What's really interesting is -- I do too! I know I need God's grace because I have so many shortcomings.
Last Sunday at church, a man shook my hand and said to me, "You are a bright, shining spiritual light here at South Shores. I thank God for you." Now that is a very nice thing to say, but it just goes to show how well he doesn't know me. I am fleshly, sin-infested, and fail regularly to live up to God's perfect standard. And no matter how hard I try, I will always make mistakes. That's why I need a Savior. We all do.
Questions to Ponder:
Paul closes our passage today with the words, "in Christ Jesus." Jesus is the only way we will ever measure up to the perfection God requires for eternal life. His words are not, "in you", "in me" or "in any of our works". It's only "in Christ Jesus" that our sin is forgiven. Have you lost your way? Do you think you are good enough? How do you measure up to God's perfect standard?
