“The Deepening of our Faith”

Thoughts for Today:

The four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) refer to Jesus' teaching on forty-three occasions. This compares to preaching nineteen times, and preaching and teaching in the same verse four times. (Matthew 5:1-2: "Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.") I think we could surmise from the example of Jesus that He thought teaching was twice as important as preaching. Jesus was in the process of making disciples of these twelve men. And He knew that teaching -- imparting knowledge and understanding -- would be the cornerstone of their discipleship.

Most of us are familiar with the Great Commission of Matthew 28:19-20a: "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." Jesus commanded us to do more than simply proclaim. We are also to explain and provide training. Those are the often missed, yet critical ingredients of our Lord's evangelism plan. The consequence has been -- although people respond and are saved -- they never mature to a level where they can reproduce their faith in others.

Questions to Ponder:

Have you reproduced your faith in others? Why not? Many people feel they have a lack of training. Is there teaching available? Of course; but to be taught we must attend. What does your church offer? Will you deepen the knowledge of your faith?
